At The Woman's Imaging Group, our highly trained radiologists may recommend ultrasound imaging, a diagnostic technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the inside of the body. While our practice specializes in breast ultrasounds, we also provide general imaging services.

Breast Ultrasound Imaging at The Woman's Imaging Group

Using ultrasound imaging technology, our certified radiologists are able to capture images of the internal structures of the body, including the breasts.

During this painless procedure, one of our physicians can assess the blood flow (or lack thereof) in any breast mass. If a breast abnormality is detected using traditional mammogram techniques, our radiologists may also recommend the use of ultrasound imaging to gather additional information.

Am I a Candidate for a Breast Ultrasound?

Ultrasound technology is commonly used to diagnose a variety of conditions that can affect the organs or tissues of the body. Because it uses high-frequency sound waves, ultrasound imaging minimizes the risk of overexposure to radiation.

Our highly trained radiologists may recommend a breast ultrasound for women who:

  • Have silicone breast implants with little breast tissue.
  • Should not be exposed to radiation due to pregnancy.
  • Are high-risk breast cancer candidates.
  • Have a family history of breast cancer.
  • Have previous biopsies suggesting abnormalities.

What to Expect During a Breast Ultrasound

  • During a breast ultrasound, you will lie down and place your arm above your head.
  • After applying a clear, water-based gel to the area, the technologist will place a small instrument called a transducer against the skin.
  • The transducer, which resembles a small microphone, emits sound waves that bounce off of the body's tissues.
  • These sound waves are then converted into a black and white image that is displayed on a computer screen.
